5 Ways to Cut Server Costs on a Video-Heavy Website
The single biggest lever for cost on a video site is not self-hosting the video at all — covered in depth in our full guide on this. But even on a syndicated catalog, there are real, smaller optimizations worth making.
1. Cache aggressively at the page level
Most tube-site pages (category listings, tag pages, even individual video pages once published) don't need to be regenerated on every request. A full-page cache layer dramatically cuts server CPU load under real traffic.
2. Offload static assets to a CDN
Thumbnails, CSS, JS — none of this needs to be served from your origin server. A CDN in front of static assets removes a large share of routine request load.
3. Lazy-load below-fold content
Don't render/request every video card's thumbnail and metadata for content the user hasn't scrolled to yet — this cuts both server load and page weight, which also helps Core Web Vitals.
4. Use a real object cache (Redis or similar)
Database queries for things like tag/category listings repeat constantly across visitors — an object cache avoids re-querying the database for data that hasn't changed.
5. Right-size your database queries
A slow, unindexed query on a busy tube site multiplies under load. This is unglamorous but often the single highest-impact fix on an existing site that's already struggling under traffic.
